Backronyms: intelligent Naming, after the fact.
I love to watch the curious and continuously evolving between names and their meanings. Many parents dream like that namespace, then go digging for a traditional source to give the name additional roots. Some even invent a meaning, just as they have invented the name. Namipedia receives many observations of brand new names with "meanings" as "wanted-for the child," "Angel of God" and "beautiful Princess."
Once in a while-namers child will go further, claiming the definition you just created as the reason for the name. I just learned a good word for a form of this: Cortical. An acronym is a word formed from the initials of a phrase, such as laser (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of radiation). A Cortical is an acronym for false, after-the-fact.Take the letters in a Word, find a suitable sentence where words begin with those letters and call it a source. for example, the golf of speech is mistakenly said to come from "gentlemen, ladies forbidden."
World namespace, Mabel. In the sitcom 1990s Mad About You, girl, the main character was named Mabel after a proverb of his grandmother, "mothers in always brings extra love."Sorry that sitcom writers, but I'm not buying it definitely name retro-hipster, cute, came first, and the catch phrase clumsy, unlikely was built on it.In fact, I picture a roomful of writers acronymic "origins" brainstorming to suitable names.
I'm starting to see more and more stories to name backronymic in real life, too. you'll hear, for example, that Lyla comes from "Love You lots, always."Is a gentle tale to tell your child his name, but source? this distinction rests solely with a name like iLy, where the acronym actually came first.
Baby Names-choosing trendy or traditional
Lists of names for children are always fun to watch, if
are you looking for a name for your baby soon-to-be-born or
girl, asking the popularity of your first
name or just curious about what currently are names for children
hot.
What I find particularly interesting is the popularity of detection
names of children over the decades. Looking across U.S.
baby name lists Government from 1880 to the present,
some funny patterns emerge, in particular as regards
children's names for girls.
For example, biblical names in Victorian times, such as
Maria, Sarah and Ruth were popular for girls.Vi
were also have many names of child who seemed very
Old-fashioned for me as a child growing up in the sixties,
including names like Martha, Alice, Bertha and Minnie.
From 1920 to 1950 certain names baby pink
popularity. for example, I went to school with many Susans,
Debbies, Patricias and Lindas. All these baby names
Since then have waned, replaced, by the 1980s, with fancier
names like Jennifer, Jessica and Nicole. when I was a
children's librarian in the 1980s my storyhours preschool
were populated with girls named Lauren and Jenny,
and little boys named Alex and Matthew.
More recently there was a lot of renewed interest
most "old style" baby names like Hannah, Abigail and
Ethan, besides many biblical names as Sarah, Rachel,
Joshua, Jacob and Samuel. There was also an increase in
baby non-traditional names including Madison, Ashley and
Brianna for girls and Brandon and Logan per child
guys.
It is interesting to consider the whys and wherefores of
such developments. sometimes, I suspect, the popularity of
a specific actor or a character could result in many
babies with a particular name. for example, were some of the
the Lauras, Born in the 1970s and 1980s gave a name
suggested by elderly brothers and sisters who were growing
up to watch "little house on the Prairie?"Were some
attributable to Laura super popular "General Hospital"
Fame?
Madison is today the name of a baby very highly rated for girls
(ranks number 3 in 2003) but, when the film "Splash"
came out in 1984, the character of Tom Hanks said Daryl
Character Hannah that Madison was not a bona fide first
name.
While the names baby girls seem to quite be subject to the whims
fashion and top ten lists can change dramatically over
I noticed that, in General, the first baby names for the moment
guys remain much more stable.Names like John, William and
James are perennial, perhaps because I am baby boys
often referred to their fathers, perpetuating the popularity of
certain names of child from generation to generation.
"Junior" shrinkage factor, baby boys are also less likely to be given
fanciful names.
A comparison of the changing fortunes of my first
name, Barbara, with those of the name of my husband, Robert,
gives a good illustration of the difference between stability
Baby girl names and baby boy over time.
My name is grown in popularity in the 1930s, 40s and 50s,
peaking at number 2 in the popularity of the name of the child,
which it held fiercely from 1937 to 1944. when I
attended grad school, class of about forty
students, there were no fewer than three baby boomers
Barbara named. I must thank the actress Barbara
Stanwyck why? unfortunately, my first name subsequently suffered a slow,
constant decline and placed in a position of pitiful number 628
the list of popular baby names for the United States in 2003.
Robert, on the other hand, has survived the vicissitudes of
baby name popularity. will hold a place in top ten
most popular baby names list every year from 1896 to
late 1980s, often with a peak at number 1 for the 1920s
and 1950. It has gradually slipped since the 1990s, but
still managed to keep the slot respectable number 35 in
2003.
When naming a child there are, of course, many other
points to consider in addition a unique name or how popular
is. here are some helpful tips that you can use with the
other children, to involve them in choosing a name for
the new baby and to make fun of process:
1. Baby names should go well with the sound of your last
name: choose a name and a surname ranging
well together.(Perhaps not something like Erasmus
Beelzebub Smith!)
2. when the family is a name all you want, look at
initials to be sure not to damage the new baby a name
with the initials that will make people laugh.(So maybe not
Pamela green Iris, which equals p.i.g.!)
3. you can not the name of a child that is so unusual that
the other guys will make fun of your brother or sister as small
He or she grows.(So maybe not Rosebud or molasses!)
4. Also do not want a child's name that is so fashionable
that it will sound funny with time your child is 10 years.
(So maybe not Sunshine!)
5. you probably shouldn't choose a name that is really cute for
a little adorable baby sound silly, but it will be when your child
grows.(Perhaps not pits!)
6. Avoid names of children who might produce an insult
When people shorten their nicknames.(So maybe not
Smellonius, or smelly short!)
7. you and your family may not want a name that is so hard
for magic or to say that people will always get it wrong
and the poor little brother or sister must go through
grinding of living people.(Perhaps not something like
Incandescent or is Incandessints?)
8. you and your family may want to choose names for children
honour of relatives favorite ancestors or special names
showing the ethnic roots of your family ... you might even find a
special name from a book or a movie you like.(As
Harry?)
9. you can look through books and children's names
Choose one that has special meaning you like-maybe
something which means "sweet" or "usually" or "brave".(So
Maybe not wimp!)
10. you can think of names that will go well
with your name and the names of other brothers and sisters,
so if MOM or dad is calling all for dinner or signature
a birthday card for Grandma that doesn't sound too crazy.
(Perhaps not "Happy Birthday, Grandma! Love, Joey,
Cindy and Dweevo! ")
There are hundreds of names is waiting out there, so
good luck in your search for the perfect name!
